odor of garlic. Do broken magnets normally smell like garlic? I don't get it. Was I just hallucinating?

Probably just the one you were playing with. It sounds like a cermet (ceramic/ metal) magnet, the type you were playing with. That is the only type I know that can break; the others are all metal alloys that would deform to some extent and stretch or fatigue before breaking. So there could have been some chemical used in their manufacture that has a smell like garlic. Next time, don't abuse your magnets!
