reinstall OS.. formatting the system partition is also good option as long as you back up the data.. if the problem persists... your RAM is faulty.. what is your RAM speed.. for XP SP2, if it is less 128MB, comp wont even respond...

I know how you feel! That's why I'm bald! I know that you said that you ran spy-ware, antivirus. Did you un-plug the mouse and plug it back in while the computer was on? If that doesn't work, get Windows Defender from Microsoft's web site. Try AVG Antivirus, it will get a lot of stuff that McAfee and Norton misses. Just don't run 2 antiivirus programs at the same time on your computer. Spy-bot Search and Destroy is another good program. The best part, these are all free! After everything is cleaned out, go to safe mode (hit the F8 key repeatedly upon restart) and re-run all of them again, just to make damn sure that everything got removed. Remove unused programs to free up hard drive space. Then do a defrag to help increase the speed of your computer (this step may take some time to complete, but it's worth it!). Defrag on a regular basis to keep the speed up.

Hello... We would first have to identify the cause of the issue.
As someone has already mentioned, boot the computer in the safe mode and check if the same is happening.
If yes, you might probably have to reinstall the OS and see as this might be a H/W issue.
If it is working fine, then try safe mode with networking. If it freezes, then it is so obvious it is due to network card.
If it is working fine, then disable all the start up items and then reboot the computer in the normal mode.
If your computer frozen while booting in the normal, for sure u will have to reinstall the OS otherwise it is clear that it is due to some start up items.

You could try system restore to return the system to a state before this problem started. If that works look at what was changed between the two dates. That may give you a clue at to the cause. Try a restore point before the D link adapter was first installed. If that solves it download and iinstall the latest drivers.
It could be a driver problem. Try downloading and updating your graphics card driver. Even though you may not have actually done something specific it may have become corrupted.
I would guess it's a driver issue.

Have you tried getting your windows CD and repairing windows? To be honest it sounds sound like a software problem, although it could be hardware related...press cntl alt delete and click on the performance tab...see if the CPU usage goes around 100% alot, or if your ram is almost to the max available...If its a hardware problem it can be lots of things, bad hard drive, overheating....ect
Might want to try erasing your hard drive and reinstalling windows as well, if you cant figure it out...it would probably solve your problem

Check the physical connections of the computer. Check the CPU Fan/case. Check the ram. The ram could be inserted backwards or you can have two kinds of incompatible ram. Check the CPU temperature, the case temperature. Try removing all unncessary components such as CD-Roms, disk drives, see if that solves anything. Try reformatting. Check the status and names of all items in your hardware manager to see if they are listed correctly. Reinstall newest drivers for all software...

Boot up in safe mode (press F8 while its booting up, you'll get a menu, choose safe mode).....If you boot into safe mode and it works fine, then it may be a driver that isn't getting alone with windows. If it freezes in safe mode as well, then I'd say you have a piece of hardware thats gone bad, if thats the case I'd start with the memory (RAM).

Option #1 at this link would be my first choice. Also, like Option #5 asks about all the icons showing on your task bar. If this is the case then you can do a crt/alt/del to bring up your process window and see how many programs might be trying to run in background and simply end those tasks one at a time.

Sounds like a software issue to me,try :START>RUN> chkdsk /f
when the black box comes up and asks to check system on restart type Y enter,then restart watch for any info on screen as system runs diagnostics.
