To put them simply,
The first law of thermodynamics states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it only changes form. You cannot get free energy.
The second law of thermodynamics states that you can never achieve perfect energy conversion efficiencies.
These two laws are extremely important in science.

Second law determines whether a process is possible or not, even if energy is conserved in a particular process it may be impossible.
