Slavery was rampant at the time of the Pharaohs.

The Arabs have enslaved Africans from time immemorial.

When Britain became involved in the slave trade the African slaves were rounded up by Arabs, or fellow Africans, to be sold to the slave traders.

Britain was involved but it was an Englishman, William Wilberforce who proposed a law, passed in Parliament, to ban Britain's role in slave trading.

Slavery exists in Britain today; young girls from all countries being coerced or tricked by criminals abroad to emigrate to |Britain where they are forced to work as prostitutes.

Assuming an upper limit of 120 years being the longest a person could survive then it is safe to say the WHOLE population of the earth is completely replaced every 120 years.

It is ridiculous to ask the present generation to make apologies for a previous generation's actions.

Taken to its logical conclusion we should be asking the Scandinavians to apologise for invading Britain. Similarly the Romans for enslaving the Brits.

Would our recent immigrants also have to apologise for what previous British people did. When all is said and done they are now British!

In a multicultural society we are often reminded that no one knows who is 'British' as we have had immigration over many centuries.

We are now in the 21st Century. Get a life!

Britain was the first western country to ban slave trading from Africa, if anyone should apologise it should be the yanks, it took them an extra 75 years to ban it, and only because the british blockaded the atlantic. Whilst jefferson was signing the declaration of independance, declaring all men were born equal, he had his slaves working his plantation,

That's the problem with the world these days, everyone wants to deny any involvement. Who are we to say that Africa wouldn't have been a better place without the arrival of the white man. Have you ever been there to make such a statement? Africa is owed alot from the so called civilized world. What did we do for them? Gave them AIDS, GUNS, and DEBT! What did they do for us? cheap labour, money, slaves! Doesn't sound exactly fair to me!!

WE OWE THEM!
I lived in Africa for a long time, and as they say dont judge til you've walked in another mans shoes!

Apologising, is a personal thing. Governments don't operate on the personal level. Also, even if they did, the people who were involved on both sides have been dead for years. So, why should people who are alive today, apologise on behalf of the dead. I don't believe in inherited guilt. It is a very namby pamby, female, and left wing thing to do. One final point, if we apologise for it, can we be followed by the Arabs and those African tribes who enslaved each other?

maybe we should all apologise to each other and get it over with how many times did England get conquered in the past and the people here were the slaves . In feudal times the serfs were no more than slaves to the gentry, and we owe the most to the poor Neanderthals us hominids made those poor sods extinct

There's no-one alive today who was a party to the slave trade. so we don't owe them anything.

Also, when we think about people's actions in the past, we musn't make the mistake of judging them by our own standards. We should judge them by the standards that prevailed at the time.

Centuries ago, Blacks were believed to be subhuman. Thankfully of course, we know better now. See how standards change?

Exactly. What has happened has happened. There is no way to fix it. Slavery has not existed for many generations. Anyone alive now was not a slave. Let it go! You do not deserve to get free money from people who do not own slaves just because some distant relative who died hundreds of years ago was a slave. Use logic people.

Of course like anyone, i am appaled by the previous acts of slavery and the slave trade. All the same, i believe since that was several generations ago, we shouldn't have to apologize. Why should WE apologize? What did WE do?
