You must be able to "shutdown" appropriately or it will really mess up your PC.

I suggest you go to Power Options in the Control Panel. Study all options to see if you set something incorrectly.

Re: Turning the PC off for now -- a couple of times my system froze. At first, I turned off the power at the strip - until a professional told me if I pressed and held the off button on the PC for 6 - 7 seconds, it would turn off. It did.

I hope you solve your problem in Power Options.

Re: System Restore - I have a Dell. There is an icon in the Taskbar for "Help and Support." When I cl this, the option to set a new point or return to a working point is on the right side of the first screen. Good luck.

Another way is to "end task" explorer.exe in your processes. That will cause immediate shutdown.

If you do just shut it down, let its diagnostics run if they come up, if it goes into safe mode, then just restart. Afterward, run defrag, that will help any files and programs that got smacked by the shutdown.

press ctrl alt delete and look for suspicios processes running, right click and end them manually. They can sometime hold up the shutdown process
