Friendship is about what they are when you first start knowing them, not what they do or become. Friendship between men and women also has to transcend sexuality and interpersonal feelings.
I dobut anyone here would choose to remain close friends with someone who becomes an armed bankrobber who wasn't one back when you first knew them.
Friendship has limitations. If a friend from grade school becomes a militant member of Islam or the IRA and you see them and they say they are off to do some important business and you fail to discuss this with homeland security you are guilty of at least some aspect of anything that becomes violent or criminal, even though you had no specific foreknowlege other than the fact they are a radial.
Being in their company is enought to warrant the FBI to tap your phone lines. PRobable cause.
If they come in to your home with an AK-47 (or ounce of pot or gram of heroin) you may not like it or feel comfortable. If they become Vegans and start telling you about what greasy hamburgers will do to you, you may not like it very much.
Where you draw the borderline is up to you.
I have friends who have longtime friends who ran off and because what is called "Jesus freaks" and they no longer associate with each other. I have no problems with either of them. I'm more liberal and can deal with their conversion tactics, as I'm a believer in Jesus, but not organized religion.

I think a true friendship is when your friend is someone you can respect. You know they will be there for you in bad times. They take the time for you when you need help. They stop and listen to your problems and offer advice but respect your decisions and stand by you. You trust them with no hesitation.

My criteria for true friendship is:
1. Friends help each other on things that can't be done by one person alone.
2. Friends do things together that they have in common.
3. Friends can be honest with each other in giving constructive criticism - from telling me when I have spinach in my teeth, or that my zipper is down, when someone's breath is 'off',
4. Friends can disagree and still love each other, being able to do 'conflict resolution' together
5. Friends don't let friends drive drunk. If a friend is doing something that is self-destructive, or obviously unwise, their true friend will talk about it in their concern for the other's well-being.
6. Friends are responsible in the relationship for their own behavior, and would not exploit the other person for selfish reasons.
7. Love shared is doubled, and suffering shared is halved. Friends share the good times and bad times.
8. Friends do not compete with each other, but they don't help each other to cheat either.
9. Friends share....

True friendship is when two pals love one another UNCONDITIONALLY, have one anothers' backs, can tell each other their deepest darkest secrets, provide a shoulder to cry on, one who's ALWAYS there for you, someone who doesn't pass judgement on you yet can give an honest opinion w/o repurcusions, someone you can laugh, cry, joke, play, shop, talk, sing, dance, etc. with....
