Go online!

There are tens of millions of small local businesses not yet online. Those who are online? They die deaths of quiet, no-traffic desperation.

Build a Web site that WORKS... one that delivers 100 times the benefits of a Yellow Pages ad, at one tenth of the cost.

Advertise - get the word out to people that you exist, that you do a quality job at a reasonable price. Maybe contact a local radio station and give away a free paint job on a an eyesore house in a highly visible location. Or contact Habitat for Humanity, and donate a great wall covering job, especially if there will be tours before the new family moves in. Be sure to put a sign out front that says, "Capitalist Family Painters and Wall Covering, 555-3456"

Then be sure you do a teriffic job. Research shows that if you do a good job for someone, they'll tell 3-4 other people about it. Do a bad job and make them mad, though, and they'll tell 10-15 people about it.

I really like Sal G's answer. He's spot on with recommending a connection with local homebuilders, etc. Try to make a connection with a good realtor, too. I'm not sure I'm too crazy about using the internet, though. You basically have a service business, and what you need to promote is that your work is superior to others in the area. I don't think any reasonable person would go online to order paint or wallpaper, and certainly not hire someone sight unseen to perform work at their homes.

Establish ties with local builders and attend Homebuilder fairs, expos and conventions in your area and state.
-Many home contractors like to use people they know for electrical, stucco, cement, tile, etc. and if you can establish rapport with these contractors you will build your presence with other contractors.
-Many times my father-in-law has received compliments from contractors and he is recommended to do other projects/jobs.

Also, sponsor a local kids soccer, softball, baseball team and make a banner and at every game hang it from their dugout. Hand out pens, notepads, etc
Good Luck!
