FIFA has a total of about 205 associated members. the FIFA World Cup is held every 4 years & the host nations will get a automatic spot in the finals. currently, 32 teams including the host qualify for the finals.

the qualification for the FIFA World Cup finals usually begins in two years time after the last World Cup. a draw will be decided for the qualification for each confederations, Europe (UEFA), Asia (AFC), Africa (CAF), South America (CONMEBOL), North & Central America (CONCACAF) & Oceania (OFC).

each confederations has been allocated their berths at the finals. at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, these are the berth allocations for each confederations: Europe (14 including GERMANY, the host nation), Africa (5), Asia (4.5), North & Central America (3.5), South America (4.5) & Oceania (0.5).

as you can see from the above, the last two spots for the finals was decided thru a inter-continental play-off: Asia v North & Central America, South America v Oceania. TRINIDAD & TOBAGO & AUSTRALIA won their respective play-off matches against BAHRAIN & URUGUAY to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

the next 2006 FIFA World Cup finals will be held in South Africa in 2010 & the draw for the World Cup qualifiers will be made in December 2007. the qualification will begin as early as in February 2008 & will be completed in November 2009 when all 31 teams qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup are all known. South Africa has qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup as host nation.
