Try spending a time without it - say when you go on holiday - use BBC Radio 2 for music, Radio 4 for news and 'proper' programming, Radio 5 if you like sports, etc....
You'll be surprised that with the offerings from just the few above, how much you really wouldn't miss your television after a few weeks of going back to radio.
We do this at least once or twice a year and it's good to do - though our kids absolutely hate it!
Also - think of all the programmes you wouldn't have to worry about - who is up for eviction on BB, the latest gossip from Coronation Street, etc - and all the conversations you would no longer have to take part in that you really find boring in the beginning?

Resisting temptation by television takes a lot of self-control. This is how I did it, and hopefully, it will help you, too:
I just told myself, one day, that I wouldn't watch TV for the entire day. Not even glance at it. I found myself holding the remote-control in my hand several times that day, but it kept telling myself, "ok, you're not going to lose ANYTHING out of not watching TV this once".
Day 1 went great. The next day, I did the same thing. This went on for a week. After that, i didn't even have to force myself not to watch. I just didn't feel like it any more!
The trick is to substitute watching TV with something more useful that you enjoy doing.
And take it one day at a time. Good luck!!! :)

You should avoid temptation altogether, not try to resist it. Don't turn it on except for scheduled indulgences. It is too addictive to think it won't drag you into its magnetic box.

By applying your intelligence. Understanding that our country is based on capitalism, lets us understand the motivations of our media. See passed the marketing, and filter through the rubble of mass media.
