and I keep getting comments like "You will never know what it is like to be black/minority." Well, true, but how do they know what it is like to be white? It frustrates me, b/c I did not grow up with the advantages that I am hearing that lot of white people are supposedly having. Alcoholic dad, single-parent household, lived in apartments my whole life, no family car from the age 8-17--had to ride the city bus...you get the idea. Plus, I live in TX...and I AM the minority here now (where I live). So--here's my question... what is so great about being in the "white" club? What do you think is the typical white experience? Are advantages more of a result of race or riches?

Higher intelligence maybe, Asians being slightly above us. Of course we have to hold everyone elses hand and try to make sure they don't do ignorant things.

Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Lets put color aside as the root of your question regards social acceptance...a greater concern to teenagers and youth than to most others...but important to a lot of people.
In any given place where there is social structure the folks who are "IN" will dictate what and who is acceptable. Prejudice runs a full gambit and yes color has its play but there are many other issues less demonstrable than color or race...in fact color may be an advantage in certain cliques.
Yes wealth also has a play but so do"
Houseing
vehicle
birth right or linage
job
education to include even the prep school and college attended more than grades themselves
taste
community involvment
chairity
demeanor

Most folks who play the "race card" are looking for something for nothing. I don't pretend to ignore prejudice exists but no one person can do away with it....it is everyone's problem to deal individually and overcome personally. In the end those who keep you out of their clique are likly those with whom you would rather not associate anyway.

Class is always overlooked in America, because it is against our beliefs about ourselves to face that class matters. But it does, powerfully.

If you are a middle class white person, your life is sooooo much easier in this country, in ways white people can't imagine - easier access to housing, jobs, a family safety net.

And, as a white person, if you hide your working class background with clothes, speech patterns, education, then all the benefits that flow to middle class whites will flow to you. A black person, no matter how educated, how well spoke, how well dressed, will, in many cases, be treated as 'black' first and this hinders many people.

Just this century, several studies demonstrated that a "black" name on a resume or a "black" voice when calling about rental real estate, will yield much poorer results than for 'white' names or voices.

Also, ponder that in South Africa, under the apartheid system, the 'minority' whites were the ones with all the power. Minority status is not about numbers, it's about power and access to the society's wealth. Methinks you are not a 'minority' in Texas. It's a big state, and I've only lived in West Texas and in Dallas, but being white and christian there is a HUGE advantage - to the point that Texas is sickening to me and my family.

There are no advantages to any race, only the money brought in from your job changes anything. Many people just like to have someone else to blame.

I am white and that is the only experience I know so it is the best. If I had different parents, I am sure I would feel differently.

You r white? For me, it is nothing special to be white. Ok, i agree they look great than others, they look handsome, beautiful etc than others but that is not mean others not great, good-looking... Beyonce, Iman, Tyra Bank, Anggun ( Indonesia ), Siti Nurhaliza ( Malaysia ), Camelia ( Malaysia ), Aisywarya Rai etc are the example of the amazing non-white. but, people always think that be white will make people attract to them ( if they r white ). at everywhere, people will look white as perfect person and they never appreciate what God give to them. That is normal.

we always look at big screen that white is rich ( they forget that homeless at USA more than homeless at Malaysia -homeless at Malaysia most of them are crazy person ), white is pretty ( the camera never focus to white skin... they got so many black spots on the skin ), white got everything big -look at sexual perspection ( but they forget all that is fake & sometime just big but not good quality : it is true for example the d!ck of white man actually look hardful but actually that is not... the d!ck lie to his boss... just look hard but powerless ), white is powerful ( they dunno that Superman, Batman, Spiderman just a myth & alot of them scare to frog ), white is educated ( but they forget that most of them that go to school since 2 yo r more dumber than non-white... and they forget that who is control the world... they r Chinese... Chinese is not white but Asian... everywhere u can find them ) etc

The non-white never thing that white is human too... white still got weaknesses...

And people will always revere white. that is reality ( hahaha... me too )

I am a San Antonio girl. Why would anyone even notice the color of skin? It is what is inside that counts.
