I have 6 usb 1 ports and don't really want to have to buy a PCI usb2 controller card. can I just update the drivers for the aging ports with the usb 2 controller drivers?

Negative. If you wish to obtain USB 2 speeds you will need to purchase a USB 2.0 PCI Card. Available at most retail stores (Best Buy, Circuit City).

After you've installed it make sure you have Service Pack 2 if you are running Windows XP.

its nothing to do with the drivers, or firmware, its the hardware that makes it usb version 2. eg the speed is greatly imporved etc.
so i would spend those few bucks and get a new usb controller card.
