If a major league pitcher is terrified of any lineup, then that pitcher should not be in the major leagues. And while that's a very good lineup, the other three teams in the American League playoffs (Tigers, Twins and A's) all have very good pitching staffs.
Tigers have Justin Verlander, Kenny Rogers and Jeremy Bonderman, all of whom have won 15+ games. And they have great middle relief with Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney.
Twins have Johan Santana (who will win the AL Cy Young), Carlos Silva and, if he can go, Brad Radke. Plus they have Joe Nathan at the end of the game, who's the second best closer to Mariano Rivera.
A's have Barry Zito, Esteban Loaiza and Joe Blanton, plus Rich Harden is coming back and Kirk Saarloos has pitched well since August 1st. And Huston Street is back to closing, so the A's have the pitching to shut out anyone.
It will definitely be a challenge taking on that Yankee lineup in a 5 or 7 game series, but it can be done. And teams like the Tigers, Twins and A's have just the pitching that can shut down that lineup.
My prediction is that the Tigers or Twins will win the American League pennant and play the Mets for the World Series.

This could be one of the best Yankee teams that they've had in years.
Line Up -
Damon - producing better numbers this year than any other year
Jeter - because he can knock in runs without hitting the ball out of the park
Abreu - he is very patient - - great trade from PHI to NYY
A-Rod - well, because he's A-Rod
Matsui - good numbers since coming back from that wrist injury
Cano - not good, but GREAT numbers since coming back from his injury - - great second baseman too.
Giambi - not sure yet (Sheffield might be the better first baseman)
Sheffield - knows how to play first
Posada - having his best year (great hitter and throws out runners from behind the plate)
Reserves:
Cabrera - one of the reasons why the Yankees are where they are . . . young, great arm, great speed, played left field like he has been playing for years
Williams - great bench hitter
Cairo - can play multiple positions (which will help)
Pitchers:
Mussina and Johnson - who the Yankees count on
Wang - another reason why the Yankees are where they are tied with Santana in wins . . . ground ball pitcher . . . good a NYY stadium
Wright - has pitched pretty well lately
Proctor - and yet another reason why the Yankees are where they are - - who would of thought Scott would pitch the way he has been (he wasn't even supposed to be here)
Villone and Myers - lefties
Rivera - cuz he's Mo
Bruney - he has rested Proctor and Frans a lot
Farnsworth - can close if needed
Yeah this could be a really great postseason team!!

The most balanced potent lineup in the HISTORY OF THE GAME?!! Let's not get carried away. And the pitching staff isn't quite as good as it used to be. While were on lineups here's one that I think compares favorably to the Yankees:
Reyes ss
LoDuca c
Beltran cf
Delgado 1b
Wright 3b
Floyd lf
Green rf
Valentin 2b
Bench Woodward, Chavez, Milledge
Let's go METS!!!

Very good pitching can shut it down, as the Diamondbacks did in the WS in 2001 and the Marlins did in 2003.
Given that, there's no team among the potential AL playoff teams that has that kind of pitching staff. There are good pitchers here and there, but Minnesota beyond Santana is a joke, Oakland has little beyond Zito, and Detroit's arms are very young. The Tigers need Kenny Rogers to be hot, but he also needs batters to get themselves out, and the Yankees are very good at taking pitches.

It's a killer lineup, but you never know. The postseason can be interesting. Teams often get hot at the right time and surprise everyone. I mean, the Yankees were probably picked to win each of the last five years, too, and look what happened. They've got a particularly awesome chance to win this year, but nothing's guaranteed.

I am a Yankee fan, but you made a couple of mistakes:
1. Sheffield played his first game at 1b yesterday. Giambi, though a subpar fielder would probably be the better choice for the position. (Giambi also hits better when not dh. I don't know why, but his avg. is significantly higher when playing at 1b.) Sheffield has a great arm, so he would be good in the of. Matsui is only average defensively, so I'd take him out of the field. Lonfg story short:
Giambi 1b
Sheffield of
Matsui dh
(The batting order itself made perfect sense.)
2. You are forgetting that pitching is a major part of winning the WS. The Yanks will have Johnson, Mussina, and Wang in the playoffs. Johnson has been inconsistant and statistically gets worse in colder weather. (October is cold.) Mussina and Wang, however, are solid. I'm not saying that the Yanks need to improve their pitching staff, but you can't just ignore starting pitching.
The Yanks do have a good shot at winning it all. I'm gonna guess that they beat the Mets in 6 games.

I nonetheless imagine that the yankees ought to have offered yet another pitcher of their loose agent spending spree. i changed into hoping for Derek Lowe to be decreased in length by making use of the yankees as well. Or a minimum of interior the procuring and promoting final date, commerce for a #4 starter because joba isnt waiting for the starter roatiton. All i understand is that Joba is going to be beginning the season interior the minors. So with any luck, the yankees can bypass after john lackey. the in reality situation with it truly is that scoot boras represntes him and has stated that he's searching for AJ Burnett money for John Lackey. yet yankees will be positive in the experience that they dont misuse the bullpen.

I can't think of a deeper line-up. Some of the players I'm listing may not even make the 25-man roster! Imagine that!
Johnny Damon - OF
Derek Jeter - SS
Bobby Abreu - OF
Gary Sheffield - OF/1B
Bernie Williams - OF
Melky Cabrera - OF
Hideki Matsui - OF
Jason Giambi - 1B
Craig Wilson - 1B/OF
Miguel Cairo - IF
Robinson Canó - 2B
Alex Rodriguez - 3B
Jorge Posada - C
If Johnson, Wang, Mussina, and Rivera are all on their game, I don't see any team beating the Yankees this year.
