I have an aquarium that is apparently overcrowded (five 1 1/2 - 2" gold barbs in a six gallon tank), and one fish who is always left out. I don't want it to continue to suffer - will the pet store take it back now that it's all grown up?

It really depends on the store. Some will and some won't. They have to worry about disease since they have so many fish. I'd call around and ask. Even ask some aquatic stores you didn't buy the fish from to see if they would take a donation. Just tell them you had done some research and realized you had bought too many fish. They probably won't give you any money for it but at least it's better than letting the poor guy suffer.

On a side note, a six gallon tank is extremely small. You're going to have a tough time maintaining good water levels in something that size and you need very frequent water changes - probably 50-75% a week possibly more often. You would be better off getting a 20 gallon tank for your fishies. It will be a lot easier to maintain and they will all be happy and healthier. 20 gallon tanks really aren't too pricey and it would be adequate for that amount of fish. Plus I don't know if you realized but these guys grow to about 4" each. 6 gallons is not even close to being big enough for even 4 adults. You're going to have to get a 20 gallon eventually to house them so my suggestion is get that going now and you can keep your 5th fish.

Yes pet stores take adult fish. I had a three year old maroon clownfish that I took in. They put it in a quarantine tank in the back, to make sure that it had no diseases such as ick. They cant just add them to their tanks. After a couple of days they will.

Mine does, I am constantly taking my guppy and platy fry back to the store when they have matured. Even my salt water tank occupants if they decide to start picking on the other inhabitants.

Yes they usually take them from you. However you wont get much money for it as they are there to make the money for themselves, but they will have the correct size tank for it.
Sounds like you need to get rid pretty quick if it is suffering though!

Just depends on the LFS. If you cannot find a suitable buyer I would just get yourself a larger aquarium (at least 50/55g).

They probably won't give you any money for the fish, but I'm sure they would take it back to give it a good home.

Maybe. If not, either get another aquarium just for him or give him away to a friend....

Yeah, but only if they're 21 years-old or older...and believe me...they do check their Id's!
