I've heard about the online world known as Second Life and I'm thinking of eventually getting myself an account. However, it dosen't work on graphics cards that come with most computers, so I'd need to get an advanced graphics card like an ATI Radeo or nVidia GeForce.

the MacBook uses the intel integrated video. There is no way of upgrading this unfortunately. You can get better system performance if you upgrade your RAM but the video card is directly integrated to the motherboard, main logic baord if you want to use apple's words.

If you have a new MacBook, it should have an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. See this site for details http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/graphics.html
Chances of replacing it however are next to impossible. So if you can't run it, you will probably be out of luck.
