A complete gynecological exam includes a history (lots of personal questions about your health, periods, sexual activity, etc) and exam.
The exam should include a breast exam and a pelvic exam.
The pelvic exam has 2 parts - the bimanual (one hand inside and one on the belly) and the speculum exam (metal gadget to hold the vagina open so the cervix is visible). The doctor should do a pap smear and probably culture for std's if you are sexually active.

It's awkward and a little uncomfortable, but doesn't hurt.

Good luck, and wear clean underwear!

It all depends on why you are going to see an GYN doc? If you are having a physical done then it will be just like going to a regular doc with the exception that the doc will do a pelvic excam and pap smear. If this is being done all they have you do is lie on the exam table and they put your legs in the stirrups. The doctor will then insert a plastic or metal speculum into your vagina so that is stay open a bit so he/she can get a better look to be sure there are no problems. If they do a pap smear they will take a small wooden tool and gently swab a sample of your cervix to put those cells on a microscope slide to send to the lab. None of this hurts and if you find it painful please by all means tell the doctor this as it should not be painful. Yes you may feel a slight discomfort but no real pain. If you actually feel pain it could be a sign of a problem or maybe just that you are nervous but the doc still needs to know this so he/she can evaluate the cause. The will do a breast exam to check for lumps but this is also something you should be doing at home. If you are seeing the doc because of a vaginal dischcarge they will take a couple of swabs with a Q-Tip to send to the lab too. If you are nervous or embarrassed remember these things; #1 the doc is there to help you and he has seen it all and heard it all before. He is merely doing his job. #2 if you are nervous take slow deep breathes and don't hesitate to tell the doctor that you are nervous. #3 If the doc says something you don't understand please speak up and ask him/her to clarify what was just said. You did not post why you are seeing a GYN but if it is for a routine female exam please bear in mind that many regular aka family docs can handle this for you. Good Luck.

I know you are probably most concerned about the "pelvic" part of the exam. The key work is RELAX. I never knew just how important that is. You will do fine. Let the Dr. know that you are a bit nervous. They appreciate your being honest with them. I'm 52 years old, and have never gotten "use" to this exam and I go every year...Not that it's painful, it's just embarrassing and a little uncomfortable.

tell her it is your first time and they will walk you through all the steps. she should explain the instruments she will be using. she will be nervous and the process might be uncomfortable (like cramps). it is over pretty fast.

she will explain everything to you. it will be a little uncomfortable, however, they do a good job of keeping you covered and explaining what is going on. don't worry...it's not that bad! unfortunately, all of us women have to do it.
