Why do people recommend that a teen girl needs to see a gynecologist. I mean if they are still a virgin can't they just wait until 18 or 21..i mean it really isn't necessary is it. I mean i'm 16 and have never seen one and really dont plan on it..only because i dont want someone looking or touching something that i have always kept private...i dont even let my pediatrician look. And besides i dont know all of what they do because for a virgin they dont have to have the exam right? If you feel fine and nothing seems to be wrong cant you hold off on it for a while, also im not a big fan of pain. Can you all explain why i just wanna know and please be nice about it because im not trying to be smart i just have always wondered about it.

you need to see one, whether or not you're having sex

if you think gynecologist visits are just for problems women have related to having sex, then whoever educated you should be ashamed of themselves

Women's health is extremely important, moreso now than ever before. There are a multitude of problems that a young woman can develop, and not even know it. When you go to the doctor for a physical, does the doctor do a GYN exam? No way, very rarely if they do. It's very important for you, as a young woman, to get used to seeing a GYN, and getting used to being responsible with your health.

Gyn exams should be done every year, from about the time a girl is early in puberty, until waaay later in life. As for your other concern, you don't let doctors examine you--this is something you should get used to. It may feel uncomfortable to have someone check you out there, but it is very necessary for the best health. Have your mother or someone you trust with you the first time if you like. But the bottom line is, you should get over the fear of having doctors examine you like that--they are doctors, they're not doing anything weird or sexual to you.

Edit: The people posting here are mostly children themselves, that's like asking your friends at school. Take my advice, i'm a doctor.

Being a virgin has nothing to do with cancer, vaginosis, yeast infections etc. I think 16 (for a virgin) is the right age. However, girls bodies are maturing much faster these days, so 13 could be the new 16. Gyno visits are not fun for any of us. But they are necessary. I had 1 when I felt fine.
Now after beating cancer, due to early detection, I tell everyone to get a pap regularly. I'd rather be embarrassed than DEAD.

It is necessary for women to see a gynecologist as soon as puberty hits. During a gynecological exam the doctor takes samples of your cervical cells. This is for the detection of things like cancer, which has nothing to do with sex. You really should go. I didn't want to go when I was younger either. I wasn't sexually active, but my mother insisted. Boy am I glad she did. During one of my routine exams, the doctor found a lump in my breast. I was 17. I was scheduled for surgery the next week to remove the lump. I am thankful everyday that I listened to my mom. Why are you so afraid to show a gynecologist your girl parts? That is what they have gone to school to do. And what is this fear of pain? Who told you it hurts? I have had umpteen exams and not one of them has ever hurt. Go see your doctor, trust me, it could save your life.

I think you are fine.
If you aren't having any problems why get an exam?
My sisters never did that, and maybe when you turn 18 you should. But don't worry about it!

i agree. this is all just a ploy to get more money out of u---or at least ur mother. if u feel fine then don't go to one. getting an exam is not painful, just uncomfortable because of modesty.
