our baby sleeps for 4-5 hours at a stretch and therefore in a 24 hour cycle, my wife can feed her only 4-6 times....is this the reason why my kid's weight is less as instructed by the doc??? and our baby does not get up and we have to try for atleast 45-60 minutes before she is wide awake...or else she may take the breast and just sleep on it!!! how do i make my baby grow in weight given our problem??? right now she is being breast fed totally.

I have a similar worry - my son is 4months and weighs 14lbs8ozs. Although this is only just below the 50% line - he started off @ over 75% line - my health vivtor said he is just finding his own level. I've been told that breast fed babies do 'dip' on these charts @ approx 4months - the stats that the charts are based on are for both formula and breast fed babies - formula do tend to be podgier @ this age - breast fed are leaner - they also have less weight problems and less incidences of obesity in later life. My son was formula fed @ first and gained quickly - then he was breast fed (expressed) and the weight gain stopped - I was told keep breast feeding because it's still better for them.

I've looked at charts - this is 2% line ie) out of every 100 babies - only 2 will weigh less - so they're a little small on weight - but what weight did they start at - it's all relative. Babies tend to only eat when they're hungry - my son goes some days with only 4 bottles because he likes his sleep. As a rough guide - they should have, in fluid ozs, 2-3 times their weight in lbs.... ie) if they weight 10lbs - you could expect them to have 20-30 fluid ozs per day. Obviously you can't measure this when breast feeding - but as long as they are happy, have 6-8 wet nappies/diapers per day, and are active for some of the time - they're probably fine and healthy. Average weight gain @ 3 months is approx 6ozs per week - although my son has only put on 10ozs in a month - so... try not to worry - keep an eye on his weight - maybe he is destined to be small, or he'll suddenly catch up and have a growth spurt - all babies are individual.

Your baby is being breast fed so that means shes getting the healthiest thing available for her. If your baby is not seeing a pedicatric doctor I recomend you move her to one. That way the people working with her are trained in little people not adults. Your wife should make sure her diet is well balanced. A nurtritionist is the best person to help her with that. Your baby may have been born on the 50% for her birth and gone down on the chart... For some babys this is normal... and some doctors look down on it. But your baby will develope and grow her own curve as long as its not a drastic change and is consistant it shouldn't be a problem.

My oldest daughter was born 50% on the charts and droped to 5% by the time she was 4 months old. From that point on she grew on that curve, she was meant to be thin and tall. She was also breast fed.

My son had a problem with weight gain. My doctor put him on Neosure and told us to put a little bit of rice cereal all his bottles. He gained weight from it. I would say though, if your doctor dosen't see a problem with her I wouldn't worry about it. Good Luck. : )

That is how much my son weighed at 3 months and I did worry about it, but he seems happy and I can't see his ribs. He is also very tall for his age.

You dont need to do anything! She might be small but she is fine. If the dr were very concerned he would have recomended what to do.
