You need to consult those familiar with the northeastern tribes. They were the non-nomadic peoples who built winter lodges (not the mobile skin homes of the plains wanderers. The Algonquin nation may have some resources.

I know they made birch bark canoes - I suspect they may have used the same for their winter lodges.

Another resource might be the Foxfire books. You can probably find them in your library. They are very savvy guides to simple living in woodland areas. They have a lot of lost lore you might be able to use in your crafting effort.

The American Indians lived in wigwam's because they were a nomadic people. Moving to where fresh game and food were to be found.

I do not know who told you they used tree bark for the coverings, but they were disillusioned to say the least.

They used deer skin and the curred hides of other animals stitched together as it was waterproof and flexible in moving.
