The US has more fossil fuel deposits within our borders than ALL of the middle east. It's locked up in COAL. The CEO of Jet Blue recently was on talk radio explaining how we now have the technology to convert coal to fuel for running our cars, jet fighters, tanks, etc. for hundreds of years. He is recommending the construction of at least 10 coal to oil conversion plants. He says that if we do this the price of oil worldwide will plummet to about 18 dollars a barrel. He also says that if we do this it will turn the middle east into the next Africa. No one will give a flyin rip about the middle east. So the US society will be insulated from the possibility of threats from oil producing countries and we will have all the time we need to develop alternative energy sources.

10 yrs may be overly optimistic but you are correct....
All we need is the political will to make it happen...
Of course, we lack the political will to even secure our southern border with Mexico so there isn't much hope on that front...

we just need the American public to allow for the drilling
Protesting and screaming ensued when oil was discovered in Yellowstone Nation Park- no drilling done

I'm just speculating, but the tree huggers would probably never let it happen cuz it sounds like it would cause some pollution. We have lots of oil in Alaska and the environmentalist throw a fit at the very mention of digging up there.

There are many ideas for making us independent of imported oil.

I think this is a huge problem, and will need everything we can do to solve it.

Nuclear, solar, wind, biofuels, clean coal.

Many people have one idea they like, and often they reject at least some of the others. I think we'll need them all.

Tell the environmentalist. They hate coal to oil conversion.
