The US has more fossil fuel deposits within our borders than ALL of the middle east. It's locked up in COAL. The CEO of Jet Blue recently was on talk radio explaining how we now have the technology to convert coal to fuel for running our cars, jet fighters, tanks, etc. for hundreds of years. He is recommending the construction of at least 10 coal to oil conversion plants. He says that if we do this the price of oil worldwide will plummet to about 18 dollars a barrel. He also says that if we do this it will turn the middle east into the next Africa. No one will give a flyin rip about the middle east. So the US society will be insulated from the possibility of threats from oil producing countries and we will have all the time we need to develop alternative energy sources.

There's only one problem with that- it is only worthwhile to convert coal to fuel or to extract oil from the tar sands/ shale, etc IF the price of oil is high (north of $40/barrel or so). It is an expensive process... As long as oil is that expensive, the Middle East will continue to benefit. It is a nice thought, though- I would rather spend the money here.

The oil doesn't only come from the middle east, buddy. Plus, there is a lot more than just oil in the middle east. Ever heard of nuclear weapons? terrorist groups? Thats why people care. Not the oil. We can get that from CANADA!

Half our territory is restricted from drilling for oil; the other half made us oil-independent for 100 years. Environmentalism and conservationism are cover stories for hoarding oil and creating an artificial shortage and dependency so the internationalist oil companies, in collusion with their cronies at OPEC, can gouge us mercilessly. Oil is cheap, clean, abundant, and here. Anyone in authority who tells you different has been paid off by the Exxon pirates.

The technology is tricky, dirty and dangerous and not developed to modern standards. Cost estimates are probably widely low if built to acceptable modern standards. There is no way many plants could be built in ten years except on a war basis not considering health and safety factors.

You been spending too many nights on Fantasy Island. Lots of things are possible and feasible, but you gotta get past the politicians who are in bed with the oil companies.
