Perhaps the Pope was unwise but no excuse for the over reaction like calling for his death. It doesn't seem to be a case of a tooth for a tooth but a thousand teeth for a tooth. I suppose the lesson is for us all to be careful what we say and do in what are difficult times.

No one likes to be criticized and for many the first emotion is anger. A reasonable person would next examine whether or not there was any basis in fact for the criticism rather than dismiss the criticism as an insult and do nothing. There is in fact an element of truth in the criticism that Islam has a history of violence. A reasonable person would then amend his or her future behaviour so that the criticism is no longer valid. Admittedly, murdering a nun and burning churches is not a good start, but changes in attitude can take time. If Muslims are reasonable people as a whole, then they will find ways to reach those of their number that are not reasonable and some good can come from the incident over time.

if you read His Holiness' comments, the speech is more of a slam at Protestantism than at Islam. He did not say that Islam brought the world only "evil and inhuman things." He quoted a medeival pope as an example of how Islam had been viewed earlier in the Church's history.

HOWEVER: regardless of what he said, the response was inappropriately violent. Extreme reactions to criticism are uncalled for, no matter by who; Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Jew, Buddhist, Wicca or whatever! Shooting 90 year old women in the name of God? come on!

My religion gets criticized all the time. My answer is to be gently reasonable and if this gets no results, I walk away.

The response was correct, the reaction was wrong. They have a right to say he is wrong but to react with calls for Holy War! Enough of this hypocritical Muslim view. If a Fatwah is seen as the correct response by the Muslim faith then they should see bombing of Muslim states, arrests and detention of Muslim's as an acceptable response from outraged Westerners when they speak the same rubbish as the Pope. Decent, peace loving people of all the nations of the world, religious or not should hold hands across the world and say "We will not stand for this rhetoric from Mullah, Pope or politician. We will not support the murder of innocents in Israel, Palestine, America, Afghanistan, Britain, Uganda, Nigeria, Rwanda or Thailand."

No I don't think he deserved the anger, the criticism is another as a public figure he should have known this he should have chosen his word more diplomatically, there are lots of vague ways to say the same thing. He is human and in titled to his opinions, we all are and of course there are those of us who feel the same but we don't have the necessary courage to say it out aloud or because we think first of the fall out, lots of religions hav e done outrageous things, but the Muslims are the ones who are at the fore front now. whether we believe it or not all religions stem from the same place. And as such, they are prone to the same weaknesses just in different forms.

That sort of comment coming from your ordinary people
which happens every day ..you know they are ignorant in what they say.. so you dismiss it ..but coming from the Pope..the bishop of Rome as head of the Roman Catholic Church..it is unheard of it is irresponsible ..it cost a life
it could of cost many lives ..and the Pope knows that
..so why say it ..besides Pope has many question marks
about his pass..this wont be his first or the last that he will create controversy..wait and see..

Freedom of speech....

Doesn't matter what he said. He can say anything he wants. The difference is that the Pope is protected by common decency and European law. In a Muslim country he would have been executed.

In a Muslim country you can only say bad things about OTHER religions.

Everything that isn't Islam gets the anger of Muslims.

The package your bra comes in, for example, with that girl on it in a bra, that's considered PORN by the Muslims. The girl who posed for that picture should be jailed or killed and one Iranian model who posed for the Arabic packaging from Madenform has her picture up on Post Offices. She's on the most wanted list for doing that.

No religion is subject to criticism. It is upto the people who follow it, to praise it or criticise it!
So, I feel that the Pope does deserve the anger of the muslims.

No. He did not deserve the volume of criticism he got. Every other religion has taken insults, but none go to the extent that Islam does to defend itself. No God would condone murder...of anyone for any reason except self defense.
