If you are someone for whom music is a passion in life, get an iPod. You don't have to use them with iTunes, it's just easier for downloading stuff, sometimes i use mine with realplayer or windows media player. Only downside of iTunes is that you can't copy mp3's from a dvd-rom (which you can fit a few hundred songs onto), which is a bit annoying! If music isn't that big a deal for you, and you have limited tastes, get a cheap mp3 player.

stick with CDs

but if you have to buy one then i'd say an mp3 player. ipods are ridiculously overpriced. you can buy an mp3 player for the same price that can hold about 9000 more songs. don't buy an ipod just because of the brand name. there are cheaper services than itunes too, if you download legally

My opiniopn is IPod's are the same thing just with a brand name. I have both and chooose to use my Sandisk MP3 because its easier to do what I want it to do. Plus half the price. But if you want to go IPod wait till after Xmas if you can you will get half price deals.
Another feature I like of the Sandisk is you dont have to use ITunes. You can use Rhapsody, Yahoo or any other program.

if you like a lot of songs and like to be able to make playlists and organize your music, get an ipod. if you dont like very many songs, and you take things off when you get sick of them, get an mp3 player, keep in mind that it may be more difficult to access your music.
overall, i think an ipod is the best investment. i like it much better than my mp3 player, and would never switch back. plus, ipods just have a higher status... way cooler :-)

I have both. I use my CFgear MP3 player more often than the iPod because it is easier to operate (you just drag and drop the files, you don't have to use iTunes to make playlists, transfers etc.) and it is much smaller and easier to carry. The iPod is good because you have access to the iTunes music store but other than this there is not much of an advantage.

depends--if u arent that great with computers, the iPod is perfect. I have had mine for over 2 years now. But, if u r good with the computer, i would reccommend one with Microsoft Digital Rights MAnagement, because there is this program coming out around december that will allow free downloads of music-- see www.spiralfrog.com .....
