The word you are looking for is WENCH - it was not only used in King Richard's time (and, by the way, if we're talking about England there were 3 King Richards), - the term wench has been used down the centuries to refer to a lowly serving girl - originally I think in a tavern or ale house. You can still hear the term used today, mostly in a teasing, joking way. If you referred to one of today's women as a wench and meant it seriously it would be considered an insult.
