I see a bunch of external usb dvd burners on ebay, but not many of them come with the installaton cd. So my question is, are external usb dvd burners plug in and play (which means you don't need any softwear to install, windows will recognize them automatically) or do you need an installtion cd? Thanks

External usb dvd burners are definitely plug and play; there is no need to install any software to make them work. The installations CDs usually come with some burning software; that is the reason they are included (just in case you don't have any burning software). You can get one without an installation CD, and get some burning software elsewhere, or use software that you already have.

Most are simply plug and play.
