Do what feels right for you. If you and your girlfriend are meant to be together, you will find a way to be together.

I assume your citizenship is Australian and she is an American?

Pal, unless you can afford two homes on 2 far away continents and the frequent travel between the two, you are going to have to decide which one is more important. Obviously if you choose Australia, you will probably lose your girl. Is going home worth it?
On the other hand, if you really love her, why can't you make a sacrifice and stay in the U.S.? If love dies, it wasn't love in the first place, sir. Love, as defined in the Bible, especially in the book of I Corinthians chapter 13, says it doesn't seek its own way, but gives up its selfishness for the other. Can you do that? If you can't, go home and find a girl there. If you can, you have the makings for a relationship that can last your lifetime.

My mother moved to the US from Australia about 10 years ago..
She has since married. They both agree that the hardest thing about being a two continent family is when both their parents get old or sick.
My grandmother had a stroke and died 2 weeks ago.
My mother flew in from California to Canberra to be with her and eventually attend the funeral. She said she felt very guilty and torn.
You will both always have family tying you to one place or another.
In the end, you have to choose your home.
It's really difficult to answer that one.

I would suggest to take regular holidays to Australia.
