I think when you are just starting, you don't have money and nothing. So it's a curiosity. I'm talking about when you're a singer.

When you sign your contract, the record company will give you money to "get started"...meaning money to produce your songs. Of course in all of that you can buy clothes, hire an assistant, get prepped up to look good. I wouldnt consider surgery until maybe after your first album goes platinum. You just want to be celeb material to begin with...a clean slate. Really use the money to create your first album. Remember, the record company already paid you for what they think you will make for them. They of course will make 10 times fold of what they paid you if you are successful, but they already paid you so "tough nuggies". Many singers/bands dont really start making money for themselves at least until the 2nd album. I think it was Ashanti that ended up not making money until she left her record company. The money they gave her wasnt enough and she ended up loosing alot of money before she made her millions. It happens all the time if you are not careful with it. Pink worked at a gas station becuase she was previlous with her record deal money. But because the record producers knew she really had something, they gave her more money so she can go back to the studio and record her 1st album.

If you sign with a record label, they'll usually give you some money up front. This will be an advance on your future royalties however. So if your CD doesn't sell enough copies, you won't make enough in royalties to pay the label back, and you'll end up owing them money!
The same is true when the label pays to shoot a video.
A lot of artists fall into this trap and have debts for years and years - even when their CDs sell pretty well. So look out, and hire a lawer with some experience in the music industry to read everything first!

they pay for it - in a way - all the stuff they do to market you comes out of your pocket/proceeds AFTER they have a marketed/sold the finished product - so in a way, you are both taking a gamble..BUT you get to keep the "work" from the surgery regardless if you are a flop or not.
