On the special edition release of the movie Poseidon, there is a documentary about rogue waves. It is a pretty good documentary about these huge waves that come up fron out of no where. Some can be at least 100 feet tall. They can take out a boat and leave little or no wreckage. In the documentary they mention that one of the places in the world where these waves frequently form is the area known as the Bermuda Triangle. They also put this forth as a possible explanation for boats seeming to disappear there without a trace.

It's a myth but not a mystery. There is no significant increase in the disappearance of planes and ships in this area of earth over that of any other. The term "Bermuda Triangle" was actually coined in 1964 so it's a relatively new myth.
The area is susceptible to powerful storms that appear and disappear quickly, tornadoes (water spouts), and seismic activity on the seabed, any one of which could cause a plane or ship to be destroyed. Human error also plays a significant role in the 'disappearances'.

It's no more dangerous than any other stretch of busily-trafficked ocean. The hubbub was due to a book written in the 1930s consisting solely of speculation about the "Lost Patrol," which most experts agree wasn't even in the area the author thought.

That brought about a lot of speculation and reinforcement bias, as any past and subsequent sinking in the area was given undue notice, but ignoring everything else.

Cruise and cargo ships go through the area constantly. In fact, a large Skeptics conference was held this year on a cruise ship chartered to sail around in the middle of the triangle for the duration.

All people love a good mystery.

We didn't think of the Loch Ness Monster, so we created the Bermuda Triangle.

By the way, considering the amount of traffic to Bermuda from all other countries - by air and by sea - it's no wonder that it is said to have been the greatest swallower of more planes and boats.

People still travel to bermuda by air and by sea - and live to tell about it.

Since child I always loved that story!
What I read is that planes or boats compasses were out of control after crossing a specific area around Bermuda triangle. It was also related, in some cases, with special events like storms or clear skys, including mirages that may had confused pilots from what is up or down. If you think about it, there is a stone in Machu Pichu, just in the middle of this city ruins, where if you put a compass around it, or place it on top, it will go out of control. I wonder if this could be related with B triangle.

Statistically, no more planes/ships/boats disappear in that area than anywhere else. IT makes a cool story, but little else. YES, boat disappear all the time..everywhere. There are just more boats in that area than in most places...Miami to the Bahamas is only about 90-100 miles, and yachts, etc. , make the trip daily. Good luck.

Apparently gases from the sea bed were released causing boats that sailed in the water at that particular time not to float. The gas
that managed to pass through the water into the sky would cause aircraft to explode if it got into their engines.
Saw this on Discovery( i think) a few years ago. So you see,no mystery!

Actually, there are twelve such 'openings' in the earth, they are called the Vile Vortices:
-Bermuda Triangle (Florida, USA),
-Formosa Triangle (Taiwan),
-Devil's Sea (Japan),
-South Atlantic Anamoly (in the South Atlantic Ocean),
-Wharton Basin (Austrailia),
-Loyalty Islands (New Zealand),
-Hamakulia (Hawaii),
-Easter Island,
-un-named (off-shore of Rio de Janerio)
-Algerian Megaliths (Algeria),
-Indus River (Pakistan),
-un-named (Zimbabwe's sand structures).

Actually, no ships were ever reported to have disappeared in that area; it's just an area of land and sea, nothing more. The stories were possibly to attract tourists, I guess, or to give it attention.
