There have been much more powerful nations in the past, just because America today is quite powerful it isn't more powerful than others were. I doubt America is really the most powerful nation even today.

Without a doubt! In 1991 They said Iraq had the fifth strongest military in the world and look what happened. They might as well have been shooting rubber bands. In the 15 years since the distance between the US and just about every other nation aside from China has only gotten greater. I dont believe there has ever been such an imbalance of greater magnatude.

Definitely not
Bin Laden the terrorist is more powerful afterall he has everyone running around changing laws, passing new laws, spending billions of dollars to fight him and we still cant find him If one man and a few of his friends can f*ck up the system so easily how can we say we are that powerful?
Other countries, nations, empires have been more powerful when compared to the rest of the world at the time when these were at the peak of their power

Yes, if we want to turn the pages of history of last 80 years only. Their had been nations/individuals which/who controled many other nations. That is why, we called Alexander, "The Great".
The short Napolean controlled most of Europe. Britain had been a powerful nation where they could boast that sun will never set when the areas they controlled are taken into consideration. The Mongols were powerful on eastern asia quite sometime.

If you mean the USA then No. It was a draw with Korea, they couldn't even defeat the Vietnamese rice farmers, it's stalemate with Cuba, got a kicking in Africa, still getting a kicking in Afghanistan and Iraq.

They were on the winning side in WWII and WWI but signed up last and had the rest of the free world to help them.

The only wars they have won was against Grenada, and that was a couple of school kids on top of a hill, and Gulf war I, which got Saddam out of Kuwait but not out of power.

They have developed the nuclear option, using German Scientists.

The World Bank has been tamed by China, India and Brazil.

"America" isn't a nation. "The United States of America" is though.

As you can read, it all depends on what criteria you use for "powerful."

We can also see that in most aspects of power, this nation is inept in using it.

Politics - A president who can barely speak English destroys ties with other nations.

Economics - Crafstmanship at an all-time low. People buy things Japanese becaue they know that the quality and care put into making them is of higher value.

Society - Inadequate social structures to keep people healthy and well-educated.

Military - Instead of using strong young men to do things such as protect and rebuild New Orleans, they are sent to die and kill overseas in countries they can't point out on a map.

When it comes to wiping out all of humanity, as a measure of 'most powerful', there are several nations that fit the bill, namely those holding strategic nukes: US, Russia, China, Britain and France. The nuclear age brought some parity to those able to sit at the conference table. Infantry and tank numbers don't count for much in the nuclear age.

I think it's A toss up between America and The Roman Empire which lasted a thousand years and controlled most of the known world at the time.

no not really when you consider all the civilatisons of the world that there have been such as the roman empire and persian and mongal empires all of which conquered much of the known world and colasped upon themsleves rather than being defeded. These kind of empires were uncontested much of the time and unlike the US could do almost anything they liked without talking to anyone else. The US is big but doesn't have the same level of influance and power that existed before.

They are indeed currently the holders of that title, unfortunately they don't have a richer History than Europe or the Far East and no doubt there have been different Nations which may have held that title throughout History.
