The extension does not make a difference. You want to research how to use key words or Metatags, these are usually in the Head of the html and are what most web crawlers pick up on.
Good Luck

Using meta tags and submitting your site to search engines won't help you, that's bad outdated advice that will just waste your time (sorry, that ruins most of the answers you've been given so far...)
You need to read up about 'Search Engine Optimisation' (or SEO for short).
Basic SEO isn't difficult but there is a lot of knowledge to swallow. Because this question gets asked so much here at Yahoo! Answers, I've written a basic guide to SEO which is freely available for download at http://www.adambunn.co.uk/seo-beginners.php
Sometimes you will get away with the basic knowledge in my little book and sometimes you will need a lot more help from a professional; it all depends on what market you are in.
As for your tld, no, it won't make a difference. Some domain extensions DO make a difference, for example .edu, but not .org (because there are no restrictions on buying them).
Good luck!

You want the short or the long answer? The short one is "A lot of Work in design and promotion of your site." The long answer is check out Web-monkey and read how to do it. Some good information there on how.
Also search for information on how to set up meta-keys in your page.
You should do this stuff BEFORE you submit your page to search engines because what you do with the structure of your site will make a difference.
And PS I believe extension does make a difference .com sites seem to be found much easier.
And have Patience. It takes more than a week to get noticed.

no, putting your site into a .org site wouldn't make a search engine's behavior to your site any different.
The reason you see more .com domains on Search engine's listing is because simply there are much more domains listed as .com (proof: query "browser" in Google, it would list Mozilla.ORG which was Firefox's browser homepage, despite there is a new homepage in mozilla.com)
The first thing you should do is to tell Search Engines your site, Search Engines wouldn't be able to index your site if you don't tell them your address. Popular search engine's site submissions:
http://www.google.com/addurl/
https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit
http://beta.search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx
and wait. To show up on a search engines listing may take several weeks to months. To check if your site have been added you might query the engine for your site's address.

Simply do a search in yahoo for "site submission to multiple sea ch engines" or go to http://www.cspltd.ndirect.co.uk/submission/
which provide a simple form to submit your site to 300 search engines. Encourage people to link to your site as that also helps it get recognised and promoted in search engine results. You can also go to Yahoo site submission page at
http://uk.search.yahoo.com/freesubmit/submit
and the other search engines which can give you some advice and pointers on promoting your site on line.

if this is a business site be smart and get a professional web site promoter firm to do this for you. they know all the tricks and will get you millions of people to your site.
if it's just a personal homepage do this
â
â
PROMOTE YOUR WEB SITE â
â
â You need to submit your site to many search engines. Search engines will not accept your site if it is listed on free-for-all list sites. They will not accept it if it is a newbie site that is about them only. Think of a subject and write about it. It can take 2 weeks to 6 months or more before they list you. Even if they do accept your site you'll need to check your listing occasionally to make certain it is still listed. If a site gets no traffic or isn't updated regularly they will delte your listing. If you are a serious webmaster you will need to read about site optimisation at http://www.searchengines.com/ Another great site is http://www.searchenginewatch.com/ Search engine submission tips (lots of info) http://www.searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/
â You'll find about 400 search engines here.
â http://dwight.clickthesky.com/search/
â There are web sites that claim to submit your site to hundreds of search engines at once. The only one I recommend is http://www.dmoz.org/ The other search engines use this directory to supplement their own directories. Youdd it to google here http://www.google.com/addurl/
â If you have a Geocities home page list it in Geocities Homepage Directory http://pages.yahoo.com/ You'll find help for that here http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/geo/gmembers/
â Read about Google's unique page ranking system.
â http://www.googleguide.com/pagerank.html
â Improving search engine positioning (ranking) with other search engines.
â http://www.google.com/search?q=improving+search+engine+rank+position
ANOTHER TIP: Join free banner exchange programs. The best ones have a 1:1 exchange ratio. and exchange ratio of 4:1 is ridiculous and best avoided.
