i want the bottles to change shape and slump but not melt to liquid, what temp would be the maximum before the glass would become molten? in a kiln

Much easier with a gas blow torch - you will be in control all the time and you can use pieces of wood to make the forms and shapes you want. Make sure there are no corks or tops on them...

forget the kiln, try using a heat gun - a high heat version of a hair dryer avalible at auto-body supply shops. wearing a heavy leather glove, hold the mouth of the bottle with pre- heated pliers, (cold pliers will cause the glass to shatter due to temprature differences. when the glass becomes pliable you may slump the bottle over, or stretch the neck long, and make those cool old tortured-looking 30" tall bottles you used to see as prizes at county fairs!

I saw some glasses that had been packed in sawdust and were accidentally burned. they came out still usable but a funny shape, it would be worth trying in an old oil drum

Try 300 degrees celcius! That should do the trick.
