Anyone who has ever gone blackberry picking in the South, has ugly tales to tell about chiggar infestations. My question is this: is there something someone can consume to prevent these critters from attacking in the first place? I know it you take B1 - 500 mg. per day, the mosquitos won't bother you, but chiggars are a real nuisance if you spend any amount of time in the woods. Calamine lotion is great for the itching after the fact, but I want to know how to prevent these guys from biting me in the first place. Got any old timey remedies out there??

Wear only loose fitting clothing, and nothing white. You either have to cover up completely or take the risk. They are attracted to areas where your clothes pinch in, like underwear or socks. They are also attracted to white anything.

You can eat sulpher tablets for a few days prior to going out and it will help. They are chewable and come in flavors. My daughter couldn't take them because she gassed up and looked pregnant at 2! Also Avon skin so soft is great to wear before. I always wash my feet and legs when I come in after being in the yard.I haven't had one all summer! You need to use the sulper or Avon before and then take off all of your clothes and shower after you have been out getting berries or in the outdoors for the best bet.I live in NE Texas and the chiggers are bad. My grandkids were covered after playing in some tall johnson grass! The "boys" were miserable! I have an old time remedy you might try. Take rubbing alcohol and rub it over the chiggers. Then get a handful of sand and rub it over the alcohol. The chiggers get drunk on the alcohol, throw the sand at each other, like rocks, and kill each other! Hope you are better soon!

Being from the South as you, I have experienced these things as well. My father always rubbed sulfur powder on me-it wasn't the most wonderful smelling stuff but it works!!! No waiting for days-and no itching!! I do not know if you can buy it in powder form, I do not see why you would not be able to somewhere.

I don't know if this will work for chiggers, but I have heard that vinegar helps repel mosquitoes. I'll try it the next time I spend an extensive ammount of time outside.
