I played wide reciever in high school also i did a couple things to catch the ball better first and foremost hand strength is very beneficial use hand strengtheners during class while reading or at night before you go to bed this strengthens the thumb muscles, making it easier to grip the ball

second soften those skillets i soaked my hands in clean soapy dish water for 10 minutes a day making them wrinkle and then apply lotion to your hands after drying them

third never let the ball hit your body try practicing by having the qb throw you a soft lob and catch it one handed on both sides then
we did a drill that we where facing away from the qb ten yards away the qb would throw the ball and say now you have no idea where the ball is until you turn you head you have a split second to react and catch the ball

fourth watch teh nipple grab the fat never take you eyes off the ball one way we did this was watch the stripes no matter how many footsteps you hear always watch the stripes when the ball is in you hands continue to watch the stripe after you tuck the ball in say up or down letting yourself know where the stripes are facing this ensures that you watch the ball all the way in any other questions feel free to email me and ask i played two years of college ball and 2 years of semi pro in arkansas

I play tight end on my team myself. If your playing junior varsity there's no need to worry. You will have ample time to improve your catching. Also, I don't mean to dog Ryan R., but you should never, ever use your body to catch it. Ever. That only increases your number of drops. Here are some tips and drills: Tips: 1. Make sure you look every pass in. Practice on running some of your routes and just focusing on looking the ball into your hands. You see NFL wide-outs drop a lot of balls because they're busy thinking about what they're going to do after they catch it. 2. Catch the ball with your fingers. This sounds extremely hard, but actually the first extremity to touch the ball when you catch it is your fingers. Have someone throw a ball to you just standing still. Make sure to make a diamond with your fingers and guide the diamond to the point of the ball. Now you shouldn't catch this way if its low. When you catch it low, your pinkies should be touching and nothing else. Open your hands into a cup shape and secure the ball when it gets to you. Drills: 1. Tennis ball drill. Take a tennis ball and bounce it at a wall back to you. Practice with each hand, making catches with just that hand. Throw some balls that will come back high, chest level, and low. A very easy and cheap drill (all you need is a tennis ball). 2. No-look drill. You need a partner for this. Have your partner stand about 15 yards away from you with a football. You stand with your back to him/her. They will say "Go!" or "Now!" and you will turn around. You should make this movement fast, because as your turning is when they throw the ball so your first sighting of the ball will be when it is half way to you already. This improves hand-eye cordinatioin. Trust me. Those are some drills that improved my catching dramatically. Good luck with them.

I wish we knew what "problems" catching the ball you have. Do you take your eye off the ball? Do you try catching with your body? Do you let the ball ricochet off your shoulder pads or face mask?

Your best bet is not just to play catch, but to do so in a game setting, which would be to run through route trees with whatever QB might be available (probably a backup, or truthfully anyone with a halfway decent arm). That's what Marvin Harrison/Peyton Manning, Chad Johnson/Carson Palmer do all the time.

That will take your mind off catching and make you think also about the route you're running, too. Because you have to be able to do both.

Well I don't know much about football, but I'll give you some advice. When you go to catch the football don't be afraid of it. Pretend its like a pillow falling from the sky and you can't let it touch the ground. Then you might catch it more often.

the best thing to do is work on your pass cathing from maybe the backup qb or someone else..it is true that practice makes perfect and as a former tight end i will tell you always look the ball into your hands sometimes its natural to use your body to catch the ball but all the great recievers (jerry rice, chris carter, etc) dont worry about the hits the always look the ball into their hands..hopes this helps
