Yes. I'm an OB and NICU nurse and I can tell you that not only has it recently happened, but it's possible for even bigger babies to be born. Not likely and very rare, of course, but possible. Usually the babies are born to mothers with gestational diabetes or have other health issues.

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) — A 38-year-old woman in northeastern Brazil has given birth to a son weighing more than 16 pounds, hospital officials said.
Ademilton, at 16.7 pounds, is the largest baby born in the 12-year history of Brazil's Albert Sabin Maternity Hospital.
By Eleoi Correa, AP
Francisca Ramos dos Santos delivered 16 pound, 11-ounce Ademilton on Tuesday at the Albert Sabin Maternity Hospital in Salvador, 900 miles northeast of Sao Paulo, said hospital director Rita Leal.
"It is the biggest baby ever born in the hospital's 12-year history and I think it could very well be one of the biggest ever born in this country," Leal said in a telephone interview.
She said Caesarean section was performed and both mother and baby were doing well.
Leal said Santos was a diabetic and that "it is common for women with diabetes to give birth to large babies."
The child was Santos' fifth and heaviest, Leal said. Her four other children — now between 9 and 15 years old — ranged in weight from seven to 11 pounds at birth.
"She knew Ademilton would be a big baby, but not this big," Leal said. "She, her husband and the hospital staff were caught by surprise."

I have never heard of a baby weighing more then 16 lbs. Yes, it is possible that a baby could weigh that much. The doctor would be an idiot not to induce her earlier though.

Possible, yes. Probable, not really. There was a baby born a while ago in Brazil that weighed 17 pounds though.

Yes I believe there have been rare instances of babies over 20 pounds being born. Guiness has the largest one at over 23 pounds.

yes. a woman in spain had a 19 lb baby a few months ago. she had gestational diabetes (which attributes to larger than normal babies) and her husband was a 15 lb baby (baby size is also somewhat hereditary).
don't get it twisted though, this is extremely, extremely rare.

It is possible. My second baby weighed 11lbs. 2.3 ounces because I had gestational diabetes. They told me if I have another one they wouldn't be surprised if it weighed 20lbs.
I got my tubes tied. Now I want to have the reversal and have at least one more baby with the love of my life.He doesn't have children ,so I told him I can probably do one more. The doctors told me there could be Major complications if I got pregnant again, but I feel I can handle one more.
