Joseph Bruchac is a great fiction writer. He writes historical fiction. His latest book is Geronimo...and it is very good. Code Talker was his release last year, and it is excellent.

you have to read the classic "black elk speaks" by black elk& john g. neihardt. also try "i fought with geronimo" by jason betzinez. and the grandaddy of narratives:"native american testimony" by peter nabokov. i've read all three and they give a good overall view of religion, social relations within the tribes, and of course indian-white relations.
for further info on the current situation of indians read "in the absence of the sacred" by jerry mander.
oh and try to go to new mexico it will blow your mind. the third world right in our own backyard!
