There is a different anglo-saxon business model, which UK shares to some extent with US, which differs it from Germany. On a number of cultural factors, UK is exactly halfway between continental Europe and US. E.g. proportion of GDP as public expenditure, and various arcane things like teenage pregnancy rates + certain social attitudes.
I think it's not just a matter of language, the fact that some time back the Americans came from Britain means we share a few things. In philosophy, you talk about anglo-american philosophy as distinguished from continental philosophy.
Also, I don't think American presidents have always been very keen on the EU, although they may be nowadays. In which case, Britain's more Eurosceptic stance would make the UK more endearing.
The Germans many be efficient, but their economy is fooked and they are only just putting in place Thatcherite reforms we did ages ago (I don't personally think this is a good thing, although it may have certain benefits to the economy as a whole it f**ks over the poor). America and UK both do the neoliberal thing. Germany does long term investment which UK hopelessly lacks but they don't do flexibility so much.
Also Germany doesn't have that much of an army, so wouldn't make great support for the America's imperialist military adventures.

Dude, 50 million Germans (the largest single immigrant group) came to the United States. And we have benefitted greatly from their influence in our society. You don't realize this, because Germans came here and became American citizens and learned the language. They were also quite ashamed by the behavior of their homeland in the mid 20th Century and not wildly interested in celebrating all things German.
And in fact, Germany is one of our strongest and best friends in Europe or the world.
And while no one can deny the Germans are an efficient people, they never developed an appropriate means for spreading their culture. The British did and that is why English is spoken from New Zealand to South Africa to Canada to Hong Kong.
And incidentally, as an employee of Siemens for many years, I learned very early on that English is the chosen language of Siemens. I attended many a meeting in Germany with only one or two of us being non-Germans, but the meetings were conducted in English.
It is also worth noting that my colleagues from Mexico City also spoke English at these meetings.

Why do we as Americans believe it must be an either/or situation? Surely we can find common grounds on a multitude of issues. The last time I looked the Germans and yes, even the French, were still giving us a great deal of pertinent up to date information and cooperation on many issues including terrorism. Don't fall prey to paranoia generated by those who wish to see us divided. Unfortunately, I must classify the media into that group as well because their only care is their own ratings/distribution and furtherance. Some call it dividends. I call it corporate greed at a nations expense. During WWII they called it treason. As to Britain being a good ally? Gee fella' Blair kissed his career goodbye for our like minded principles. What more do you want from them?

Brits speak English, while Americans speak a bastardized version of English called American. Actually, our roots are also in Germany, though, especially throughout Virginia through Kentucky. We actually stayed out of the first couple of years of WWII because we couldn't decide which side to choose. You can thank a German U-boat skipper for deciding us.

Actually Americans speak English and just because their prime minister supports Bush's ideals doesn't meant the English people do. The last time I checked Germany was our Alie as well but that is questionable too.

No. The Founders of the US were second and third sons of the British peerage. Throughout US history, almost all of the presidents have been from those families and have British roots.
Even W is related to the queen of England through his mother.
For whatever it's worth, the US is still a colony of Britain in many ways and has copied English common law, basic values, and looks to Britain for cultural and moral guidance.
