My mom has dreads. And a lot of offices won't hire her because her hairstyle is "inapporpite". I don't get it. It's her hair and that's how she styles it to keep it healthy. Why do Blacks folks have to relax their hair just to fit in? Why can't we wear our nautral hair? I know wearing you hair in a certain way is a choice. But why won't a office hire someone with braids? White people wear their natural hair all the time. I even stopped straighting my hair because it was getting damaged by the chemicals and my hair started to break off. Right now I'm trying to get a afro like Trace Ellis Ross from the show Girlfriends.

I have always worn my hair natural and have no problems. She should wear a wig on the days she is interviewing. I would say the same to a white person with a mohawk. It would be very hard for her to prove she was discriminated against because of her hair.

Now if she has a job and someone told her that her hair was inappropriate, then she would have a legal issue.

Because they aren't ready to embrace our culture.
Some people are intimidated by blacks wearing their hair natural because it lets them know that we embrace our culture and that we are proud of who we are and where we come from.
Nothing scares some people more than a proud black woman or man.

I have met successful whites you wish they could wear some of the style we do.
Its funny how we relax our hair to make is straight, but they perm their hair so it can be curly.
As soon as we wear our hair naturally curly, it becomes a problem.

wel i woudent say that.and it certanly isent descrimanation because she is black, because white and black racism has long gone now,the only racism that goes on is asians and blacks and whites with asians.the reason i say that is because you say she is black?and i dont think the couler of her skin has anything to do with it as black people and white people have the exact same cutures, religion, backgrounds.im quite sure the company dident employ her because she probebly wasent suited to the job.i have a relitive who is white and has dreadlocks and some places wil employ her others wont.its all down to what the company is looking for in the person.and even though i know what your saying personaly i wouldent employ someone to work in an office,i would want someone who is smart and tidy.for example i am quite sure that if it was black person interviewing her he would probebly say the same.and same thing for a white person,if i grew my hair so it was dead long and scruffy even though it would be my natral hair,do you think anyone would want to employ me?i certanly dont.do you know what i am saying?

Because some white people just don't like it and if they are the ones hiring, then sorry to say, they aren't gonna hire someone wearing their hair that way. But then again, how can you be sure that's the reason why she doesn't get hired? Have your mom straighten her hair and then look for jobs and then see if the results have changed.

You totally miss the point... it's called the "Golden Rule"... those who have the gold, make the rules.

It's THEIR COMPANY... that she is trying to get a job at and it's THEIR COMPANY POLICY and it's THEIR DRESS CODE... and if she doesn't like it... then she can get a job where she can wear her hair any way she chooses... she is just not going to get a job with THOSE companies who have restrictive dress codes..

SO GET OVER IT.! She has a right to wear her hair any way she wishes... and they have a right not to hire her.!
