Nothing works but pure will power. The one I love said she would like for me to stop. Cold turkey is the only way. I stopped 9 years ago. After havein smoked for 35 years. You can. I am not all that strong. You just need to want to. I hope for the best for you. It is a major life change, but I think you might be up to it. Don't waste your money on drugs and crap. Just quit. You can do it.
As definite as he sounds Mel is out to lunch. As evidenced by others.

OMG! Safe? Are you kidding me? You're better off quiting cold turkey than smoking!!!! Unless you have an explosive personality, you're not going to go out and kill someone because you don't have nicotine. You'll just be a little cranky. The gum can help. It takes the edge off. But, there will be a time when you have to quit that too...

I smoked for 10 years, and cold turkey is the only thing that worked for me. The first 3 weeks are the worst, but after that it gets easier. You just have to keep telling yourself you're not a smoker anymore. And stay away FAR AWAY from people that do for the first year.

I quit cold turkey after smoking for 15 years. It was very hard for the first 21 days. Took another 3 - 6 months to stop thinking about it every day. Jump in at the deep end and get it over with. Don't pro long the withdrawal symptoms. You will suffer for a short while compared to slowing suffering for months or years.
