on my landlords table, the varnish came off in patches (onto the tablecloth!) under the plates where people sat for dinner. is it possible to revarnish only on the patches? how do i do that??

Well it sounds like the landlord did not do a good job in the first place. To do a good job, remove the varnish, sand the table top and redo it. However that is a tough job and I would only do it if the table is worth it. I would then put polymer finish on top to protect the varnish.

If the table is not an antique, it can be re-finished without worry. I doubt that it is very old, because if a finish is applied correctly, it would last for many, many years, and would not peel off under a table cloth. The table needs to be stripped, sanded, and re-finished. If you try to varnish the spots that came off, it will be very noticeable, and the same thing will happen again.
