Below are a list of no chemical, and no or little health or safety dangers way of killing grass.
1. Cover with canvas, newspapers, opaque material for 1 to 2 weeks. Grass will die or at least thin to a minimun.
2. Add some water and walk over it, stomp on it. Even load a wheel barrow and roll on it. In a couple of days all plants will die.
3. Get a cow or goat to eat up the grass.
And lastly if the first three fail:
4. dig up grass and dirt, pile it up and burn it with dry grass or branches. Enclose with non flamable material like metal sheet around bundle and wet surrounding to prevent fire,
If desperate
Forget about health, just use chemical grass and weed killers.

I used to work at an agricultural extension office and worked on the grass crew. When ever we were through with a test, or wanted to kill grass, we would cover it with black plastic for about a week. That will kill it deader than hell. It suffocates it plus the temp reaches unbearable levels.
