My mother tried this on her doctor's advice. She really had problems taking regular niacin--until she switched to "non-flushing niacin," so if you're considering niacin be sure to get "non-flushing." She was not successful with niacin treatment and had to resort to prescription meds. Everyone is different, though and I would definitely try niacin. It's better than not doing anything. Yes, it can. My doctor just perscribed it for me and I have read that but if it can also cause hot flashes and a funky taste in your mouth, takes some getting used to.

Also if you are on a cholesterol medicine research it. It can cause serious side effects with the cholesterol medicine Vytorin and I suspect others.
