Recently my 2001 Pontiac Grand AM has its SES light on, and I got the DTC code which is P0442 (EVAP Emission Control System Leak, small).
Could you please tell me what you can tell from that code and what part of the car is wrong? Thanks a lot.

It became on a day after I fed the car. With the light on, I added gas once more, and tightened the cap, hoping the light would be off, but it's not. Anybody can tell me how to reset the light by myself? If I reset it and it wouldn't come back again, it'd be greatp; otherwise, I'd better follow Steve's suggestion. Thank you, guys.

That code is for the fuel system the system performs a pressure test when the vehicle reaches a certain speed for a certain period of time, predetermined from the factory. The Gas cap is the most likely suspect. you see the vehicle will periodically pressurize the fuel system to check for leaks. If the cap is loose, the system can't pressurize the system and assumes there is a leak. tightening the cap is only one part of the answer. check to make sure the filler neck is not corroded, it it is plug the tank hole with a rag, note don't put it in all the way silly. use a brillo pad to clean any rust. then re-attach the cap. the light will go out on its own once the vehicle passes it's own tests 3 times. so give it a good drive up to 50mph or so for about 20 mins.this should turn the light off. if not it is probably something else and you should see your dealer

P0442 is an Evaporative Emissions code that sets when a small leak(vacuum) is present. If you just filled up with gas and the light cam on afterwards,a loose gas cap is the most likely cause.Disconnect the negative battery cable for 10 seconds will clear the code.If the code still comes back on the take it to your dealer for a evap. system check.

It could be something as simple as your gas cap not being on tight enough. This just happened to me and I had it reset and then the light went out. Have you recently bought gas?
I don't know how to reset it but the auto shop did it for free, it took about ten seconds. The mechanic had some kind of tool or tester not sure what and did what he did and its been fine ever since.

It is for a small vapr leak, which means that the EVAP system has detected a small fuel vapor leak (Federal Emissions).
Check your EVAP Purge Solenoid & the canister. Also make sure that all hoses & pipes are correctly installed.

po442 code only applies to evap emissions. Have someone clear the code and see if it reappears.if it does then you have a small vapor leak in evap system. It could be a hose off or a purge valve leaking.

Sounds like the O2 sensor is bad, it's on the engine in the exhast area .
Looks like a spark plug (large) with 1 or more wires coming from it.

Or the emissions canister hose has a crack in it, its black and will have 3 or 4 rubber lines going to it.
