You can be fairly sure that you won't get viruses from Yahoo, but simply using Yahoo as your start page doesn't offer any protection from other sources.
Get a virus guard (I like Avast)
Get a spy-ware scanner (I use the combination of Spybot and Ad-Aware)
Get a firewall (I like Sygate)
And finally, keep Windows up-to-date with http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate
All of these things are free.

u won't get virus from yahoo, but if u visit any site vulnerable to viruses or spywares, u will. So it's essential to have an antivirus and 2 or 3 antispyware programs handy. Spybot- Search and Destroy and AdAware SE are excellent choices. for free antispywares. So is AVG for free antivirus. Spywares and viruses come only from disreputed websites. Using yahoo as homepage is okay. Actually i use no homepages. Use Firefox as a substitute 2 internet explorer. It's much safer(better as well) The most u can get from yahoo is a tracking cookie ( registers how much times u viewed an ad, not harmful in anyway). There is another form of malware, different from virus and spywares called worms. They may creep into your computer from out of nowhere coz they donot come from any sites, but multiply bcoz of network flaws. So it's better to have an antivirus, antispyware and Firewall handy. ZoneAlarm is an excellent free Firewall.
