You have what is called a Barber or Liberty Head dime. That year they were made at the Philadelphia mint 18,870,543 minted, the Denver mint (D) 11,209,000 and the San Francisco mint (S) 3,520,000. The mint mark is on the reverse below the wreath. As you can see the S one is the rarest. In grade good the Philly and Denver sell for about $3.00 each and the S mint mark for $4.00. These are retail prices. The value goes up if the grade of the coin is better. You need to see a coin dealer to grade it. Grading on the net can only be done with a high quality scan.

Coin valuations are handled by numismatics. There used to be only two national companies who graded coins, one was Numismatics Guaranteed, my wife used to work for them. When a local coin shop offers to grade your coin, they send it to one of these two companies. A local coin shop will give you an idea if your coin is worth anything, but a good place to start is the library. Coin valuations depend on a lot of different factors including quality, wear, etc. It's possible that your dime is only worth ten cents, five dollars, a hundred, etc. I used to teach an eBay class and I would demonstrate how a quarter in my pocket was selling for $5 on eBay. Do some research on your own and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Barber Dimes are NOT expensive unless you get into the rarer years. 1911 is about &1.75 if it is in good condition, a little more if it is uncirculated which I doubt since you found it.
Sorry.
