cats have a very stong sence of smell.
if you had a container of ammonia, that smell would keep them at bay....
ammonia ( which is present in cats pee) drives them away ( a cat don't poop in a dirty box)
if there are kids or anyone inclined to have an accident in that area, use caution
you can pour that on the ground, but rain will wash it away,
there are also commercial products availbe like "lassie away"

Sorry I don't have a good answer for you, I have the same problem with my neighbors cats in my garden.
In my garden I put chicken wire under the mulch, they don't like getting their claws caught in it when they covered their poo. I've tried the water container...it was used to get a drink before or after they used the bathroom in my garden.
I hope you find a humane way to deal with them in your yard.

We have a lot of sand in our yard and the cats like to go there. But after we planted, we put another pile of sand somewhere else, and they started going there. Try putting sand somewhere away from your yard, but be sure they know how to find it.

spread out some sand in a corner of the lawn. They'll poop there.

Try putting catnip on your neighbor's lawns. That will attract them away from yours.
