There's no cure, really, but you can learn to manage or even eliminate your symptoms. Yay! The problem is, there's no one thing that works for everyone. In fact, the thing that helps one person is the worst thing in the world for another. Here are some things to try:
NUMBER 1: Be sure to be thoroughly tested to be sure it really is just IBS. Up to 25% of IBS patients actually suffer from Celiac or gluten intolerance, which is often missed by the blood test, and there are other conditions your doctor must check for before dismissing it as IBS.
2. Try the diet described on http://www.helpforIBS.com . It's pretty easy to follow, and involves eating a lot of soluble fiber and less insoluble fiber- it's all explained on the site and costs nothing.
3. Probiotics are "friendly" bacteria that help with digestion. Many people find their IBS emerges after taking antibiotics, because the drugs kill off all bacteria, good and bad. You need to buy a quality brand, because many are not what they claim to be. Recommended ones include Digestive Advantage IBS (pretty easy to find in drug stores and not too pricey), Cuturelle, Kirkman Labs, Trader Joes.. They should contain at least a billion CFU.
4. Experiment with eliminating certain classes of food from your diet for at least a week. Dairy is a very, very common problem (not just the lactose but the protein as well). Others are wheat/oats/barley/rye, soy, other common allergens, and in my case, it was MSG and MSG-containing additives like malt extract, "natural flavors", and soy protein. (I've been doing great since I changed my diet!)
5. Stress elimination does help - acupuncture provides relief for some people.
6. Find a good support group to get ideas and have a forum for your questions - I LOVE the group on the IBS board at WebMD.com. The people there are very knowledgeable, wise, and always willing to answer your stupidest questions =) If it wasn't for those folks' help, I'd probably still be suffering everytime I ate.

I was diagnosed with IBS many years ago. The best thing that ever happened to me was when my brother met a nutritionist and she gave him a diet to make me healthy. When you are having cramping, avoid fried and high fiber foods, carbonated drinks, alcohol, and coffee. You can drink sweet tea and apple juice or cider. It is actually good for you. Always keep steamed or boiled rice, applesauce, baked, broiled, grilled or boiled chicken on hand. I'm sure that your doctor has already told you about how bad stress is on IBS. Try to always get enough sleep and do things that you love. Surround yourself with people that make your life peaceful. Take the medications that your doctor prescribes and always follow the doctors orders. But, if you can possibly consult a dietitian they can make the difference between an average recovery or an amazing recovery.

I have read that there may be a response to shiatsu, acupuncture or many of these alternative remedies as it could be due to a blockage between organs or a poor functioning of that organ. Not fuly tried and tested

Ask your GP for Spasmonal Capsules - my daughter has taken these for years and they actually do work.

avoid spicy + fried food.
eat lots of fibre + drink lenty of fluids, esp water.
