a purse usually does not have a strap but a bag usually has one thats their basic difference but they are similar in that they can both hold things

Well they both hold a lot of junk. The difference being you can put a purse in a bag but you can't put a bag in a purse.

In the UK a purse really means a wallet so men carry purses and women carry purses inside their bags.

A PURSE is a very small BAG that women use to keep their money in. A PURSE in American English is the same as a handbag.

A bag is a plain, one color item. A purse is much more girly, with sequins, beads, and all that ther crap on it.
