If the gift has little monetary value but shows that he has paid attention to her interests then it is sort of a signal that he feels close to her even if he doesn't say that in words. AN example would be a subscription to a magazine that she has talked about enjoying the articles in.
On the other hand if he gives her jewelry of more than trivial value he is thinking of her as someone he wants to be special to like a steady bf or a fiance. In that situation it ws dumb of him not to be more vocal about his intents.

It might depend on the gift, Tom. Flowers, chocolates.....would say, like your other answerer said, that the man is interested, but shy, and above all..respectful and courteous. It goes a long way with women.

If the gift was something else.............like underwear and stuff.............I would be very alarmed.

I hope this helps.

It depends upon what the gift is.

There are gifts that mean something. For example, a watch means that the next gift will be an engagement ring.
