Hi all,
I love to swim. I swim laps at an indoor pool as often as I can. And I always swim with a T-shirt on. I'm not trying to hide something. It's just the way I prefer it.
Now a friend of mine remarked that he thought it's a gay thing to swim with a T-shirt on. I'm not aware of anything like this. Do gay people swim with a shirt on more often than straight people?

@ pathfinder: Good question. That's what I'm trying to figure out.
@ tsdeck5: Stupid as the remark may be, I'm sure it wasn't meant to be offensive.
@ too K: I know many fat people wear a shirt to the pool. In my case, that is not an issue though.
@ ...mr2fister...: I'm not sure. He may very well be.
@ havanadig: Okay, here's the drill. I just wear shorts the way you wear shorts, and I wear a T-shirt the way you wear a T-shirt. Arms through the armholes, head through the neck. And then I jump into the pool.
@ who da wha?: I don't see many people wearing a T-shirt to an indoor pool. Is that a common thing in NYC?
@ Chuck G: Call me ignorant :-) What is the difference between gay and queer?

@ stephiluvvv: Seriously?
@ owlwings: Yes, many friends of mine would have expected me to swim in speedos. It's the old-fashioned idea that gay people would naturally like to show off their body. Well, I for one, don't.
@ looksadpaper: He meant homosexual. He's a good friend of mine, and he knows I'm gay.

@ san_mateo_guy: I don't have a lycra shirt. And a regular T-shirt is cheaper.

@ ♫ Sarah ♫: What could possibly make you say that I'm not gay? :s
@ Typhoon: Naw, I'd rather keep it on. Thanks though.

I've never heard of that. Anyway, who the hell cares how you swim? Tell him he's probably gay for knowing that, then he'll keep his stupid comments to himself.

No, its not gay to wear a shirt while swimming. Honestly, I think your friend is gay, because the only type of people who would have said that are either gay themselves and try to make them feel better about it by calling other people gay, or they are often criticized on the things they do and just criticized others to feel better. It's really your choice on what to think your friend's problem is.

It gets wierder by the day! Everything suddenly has become a "Gay thing." This is "Gay, " that is "Gay," ...soon, breathing will be a "gay thing."
The only people I have seen swimming with a tee on are those who want to limit the amount of UV to skin from sun...even then, it is not very effective. Swim how you want, ignore this kind of stuff, and, Straight or Gay, why care about what an idiot has to say? Ask this guy for a listing of "what is Gay this month." If the list is extensive, ask him how he knows so much about what is "Gay."

I am not gay, and I always start of with a tee shirt and shorts on. I just hate my body. I am told it is not that bad, but I hate my stomach and thighs. Especially after I had my son. I have a crochet tee shirt I always use for swimming. I even wear it in my parent's indoor pool too.

People use the word 'gay' these days very loosely! Recently I came across a teenager who said she thought it was 'gay' to like math! She didn't mean it in a sexual sense, either - she meant 'uncool'. It's possible your friend simply meant that! (What is the world coming to!)
As a rule, gay men would be more likely to swim WITHOUT a teeshirt than with, I would have thought! (But, not being gay, how would I know?)
PS - as far as I know there is really no difference between being 'gay' and being 'queer'. Queer is a word which has tended to go out of fashion, so some people may apply it instinctively to OLDER gays (and perhaps people who haven't come to terms with their sexuality properly).

Were they using "gay" as in it's a thing gay people do, or "gay" as in an insulting adjective, as one would use "lame" or "wussy"?
I would say if it's the former, then no. But I can honestly say it's something I've never even considered, but it's the swimming season here and I'll keep my eyes peeled when I'm next at the beach.

Being gay and wearing a T shirt while swimming have nothing to do with each other.
