Can you help me with a social studies sentences?

I'm doing a social studies report, on Jameston, Virginia and I need to know why they should come to America in their time, not this century. I only need a couple of senteces. And please be serious with me.

The first settlers of the New World as it was called back then. Came here to escape religious persecution, To have a Fresh start in a New World were they would be free to practice there relgion without fear.
