Well let me tell you if you are fair skined only start out with about 7 Min's. There is no way someone can take the whole 20 Min's without burning. Gradually work up to the 20. Don't use any lotion with mineral oil this will also slow down your tanning. This includes regular lotion not just tanning lotion.

Tanning beds are bad for your skin. They can cause skin cancer.

That being said, here's what you do.

Lay down nude or in a bikini or however you want to tan your skin. Lay down on the glass bed. It has tanning bulbs above and below you. Cover your eyes with goggles. Put a small towel underneath your neck for support. Pull the top down over you. Push the buttons to turn on the timer and let it go.
You'll sweat like crazy and burn your skin to whatever tan color you want. When the timer goes off, get up and dry off with a towel, clean the tanning bed for the next person. Put your clothes back on, pay the clerk and leave.'

Most tanning salons will offer advice. The first time just go a few minutes, it will depend on if you have fair medium or dark skin. Make sure you buy a good tanning product to use, you will tan better and it will keep your skin from drying out. Once you get to your tanned level, going once a week will maintain your color. Also if you have color on your hair or it tends to dry out you may want to cover it up with a towel. I always get told its bad for you, but its my time to relax. I enjoy going.

get sunless tanning lotion, works faster, easier, no sitting in a tanning bed getting hot spots, no tanning circles on your rear, or the leapord tan lines, lol, my wife uses it and it looks great, lasts long and is alot safer for the skin, my sister hit the beds for many years, now her skin looks like a dried up cow hide

If you're really dead set on going, heed other's advice, but when you're laying there, have your arms out to your sides a bit. Friend of mine in high school tanned like crazy for prom, but kept her arms right at her sides, and her armpits were bright white!
